JASIRI, a flagship initiative of AGGP, invests in East-African Talent and start-ups at the early and high-risk phases of a meaningful entrepreneurial journey. We introduce entrepreneurship development programs at two stages of the entrepreneurial journey: namely Talent Investor and Growth Accelerator. The Talent Investor program introduces JASIRI Fellows to equally ambitious co-founders, and supports them on an individual, team and business level through seasoned Facilitators, Mentors, Business Coaches. This is complemented by catalytic entrepreneurial ecosystem interventions. JASIRI Growth Accelerator invests in early stage, high potential startups that may still be too risky for commercial funders to invest in. Early-stage ventures with potential for high growth and demonstrated product-market fit are provided with funding to support their early growth and assisted with investor readiness. We are seeking an M&E Assistant to support our measurement efforts.

 

About the Position:

We are looking for a strong team player ready to operate flexibly in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment. We need a Data Jedi Trainee who is excited to learn new skills and improve existing ones to help us make sense of the force that is the sea of data. We need someone who is agile and an analytical thinker. Your tasks and responsibilities will change regularly as we grow our programmes and develop new ones based on your keen insights.  You will need to learn quickly and always be ready and keen to accept new challenges. But at the same time, help us stay true to fostering a strong data-informed culture. We will empower you in ways you cannot even imagine and in turn you will strengthen our team and your insights will inform our programs.

 

Responsibilities:

Key performance areas include, but will not be limited to:
  • Working closely with the Knowledge Research Unit (KRU) to develop monitoring and evaluation instruments such as surveys, focus group discussions and dashboards.
  • Assisting the KRU team with data cleaning, processing and analysing.
  • Effectively communicating and presenting the data analysis or processes in the form of reports or presentations; whilst also editing and commenting on KRU reports.
  • Adding value to relevant sister Allan Gray philanthropic organisations where possible
  • Conducting desktop research to assist the KRU.
  • Providing feedback on the internship program and helping to improve the program.

 

Job Requirements

Experience:
  • 0-2 years of experience in a data scientist, business analyst or researcher role.
  • Basic understanding of and/or willingness to learn to use statistical tools, algorithms and software: regression, simulation, scenario analysis, modelling, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, etc.
  • Experience using statistical computer languages to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets will be advantageous.
  • Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders; this experience could have been obtained during university studies.

 

Education:
  • Minimum of an Honours or Master’s degree in statistics/data science/computer science/economics/entrepreneurship/innovation studies or other fields.
  • Familiarity with the following software/tools: SPSS, Eviews, etc will be highly advantageous.

 

Skills:
(All skills can be but not limited to those gained whilst at university)
  • Proactive, curious with a strong drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques.
  • Strategic mindset with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Analytical and conceptual thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks is not a requirement but highly advantageous in this role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams.
  • Strong planning, organizational and time management skills with an eye for detail.
  • Passionate about the transformative power of entrepreneurship.
  • Passionate about youth development.
